An Irish George II Mahogany Side Table, of Unusually Slight Form
The gadrooned solid mahogany top, with outstanding depth of colour to the timber, with plain frieze above extensively carved apron incorporating acanthus and foliate carving, flanking eagle heads, and punched surface. The central carved lion mask is exceptionally executed, showing the energy and confidence of the cabinetmaker, and demonstrating the unmistakable high quality of this side table. Not only is this table unusual for its more modest scale and dimension, but the side aprons are also decorated, being centered by overscale scallop shells to further enhance the quality of carving. With acanthus carved cabriole legs, terminating in paw feet. Irish, c.1750.
Height: 31 in; 78.5 cm
Width: 37 in; 94 cm
Depth: 23 ½ in; 60 cm
Literature:
For a similar, but larger, example: Irish Furniture, The Knight of Glin & James Peill, 2007, P.112, fig.147.
