These four basso relievo pictures, which are in remarkable condition and still in their original black and gilt-japanned frames, hail from Samuel Dixon’s 1755 series ‘Foreign and Domestic Birds’ , originally conceived as a set of twelve. Irish, c.1755, By Samuel Dixon.
Depicting: A White-Headed Parrot, Grapes and Butterflies, dedicated, to the Right Honourable the Countefs of Kildare. A Blue and Yellow Macaw, Indian Redstart and the Sparrow of Paradise, dedicated, to the Right Honourable Lady Castlecomer.
A Green-Wing’D Dove, Red Throated Humming Birds, Peacock Butterfly and the Ultramarine Butterfly, dedicated, To the Right Honourable Lady Molesworth.
A Bullfinch, a blue Titmouse, Peaches and Apricots, dedicated, To the Right Honourable the Countefs Dowager Kildare.
Note: One signed on reverse ‘GH’ (for Gustavus Hamilton), and another ‘James Reily’.
