A Pair of Monumental Scale Irish George III Mahogany Peat Buckets
The buckets retain the original ornate brass lifting handles and brass rings, and have later fitted brass liners. These remarkable buckets belong to a group of large buckets with the same or slight variation of this handle that I have identified to date, including one in the hall of Florence Court, County Fermanagh, Northern Ireland, and a pair and single of spiral twist form in private collections. Irish c.1800
One bucket with a printed paper label to the inside reading: ‘Frances A. Elkins, Monterey, California’.
Frances Alder Elkins (1888-1953) was a leading Californian interior decorator in the first half of the 20th century. The paper label indicates that these buckets were not only part of one of her prestigious commissions, but also part of her private collection at Casa Amesti in California.
Height: 31 1⁄4 in; 79.5 cm
Diameter: 21 1⁄2 in; 54.5 cm
Width (handle to handle): 25 1⁄2 in; 65 cm
